When part one of this story was first published, the full impact of the coronavirus had yet to be understood or articulated by the authorities. Nor had we yet to experience the social unrest and call for change brought on by the murder of George Floyd. It is our sincere hope that all of you,  your families and team members are well.  And please remind yourself of a future of positive and communal growth as we all work towards honoring and respecting personal liberties regardless of race, color, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, or national origin.  A world and environment of Non-Discrimination……

Science has shown us that psilocybin therapy has positive effects in treating depression. What is not quite understood is the full how. We do know from brain scans that neural code can over time become ‘buggy’ and appear to benefit from an entheogenic reset. Research indicates the those that are afflicted by depression and turn to psilocybin, find more connectedness and acceptance of their emotions. Contrast that with antidepressants, which can leave users feeling dull and flat. A list of antidepressant side-effects, which are well documented, can be found here

Recently, the nation’s oldest research center, Johns Hopkins, has launched a center dedicated to entheogenic study, representing what is probably the world’s first and largest of its kind. Their Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research is putting their initial focus on psilocybin, with studies aimed at depression but also with addictions such as cigarette smoking or illnesses such as Alzheimer’s.

We had the pleasure of connecting with a local businessman who is incorporating myceliums in his company’s products. Matt Lancor is founder and president of Kombuchade, a Chicago-based maker of specialty kombucha drinks, with an emphasis on plant infusions. Matt and his team have formulated a Recovery beverage using Organic Spirulina and THC-Free Hemp Extracts, and he is currently Barrel Aging a blend with Reishi and Maitake mushrooms. Matt believes in the potential of the Plant and Fungal Kingdoms for improving the entire mind & body experience, especially for those that may engage as high-endurance athletes.

And Matt is not alone in this area of thought. The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelics Studies (MAPS), is recognized as the pre-eminent supporter and advocate of medical, legal, and cultural contexts for people to benefit from the careful uses of psychedelics and marijuana.  In an article penned by athlete and author James Oroc, the author discusses the increase of usage at “psycholytic” doses, in particular, among winter sports athletes. The term “psycholytic dose” refers to low, sub-threshold doses. Or more commonly referred to as “microdosing.” “Virtually all athletes who learn to use LSD at psycholytic dosages believe that the use of these compounds improves both their stamina and ability,” writes Oroc. Many of the athlete’s report improvements in balance, reflexes, and concentration, along with the ability to overcome fatigue and altitude sickness. Interestingly, they liken the experience to being in a “flow-state” or being “in the zone.” Orec goes on to report that users report that they sense time as appearing to slow down and that they become capable of “instantaneous feats of non-thinking coordination.” What remains to be decided is if microdosing of entheogenic plant materials will be considered, by regulating sports bodies, as PED’s (Performance Enhancing Drugs).

One may ask why time is being spent on athletic studies that incorporate entheogenic use when therapies that address a host of mental illnesses have already proven to be successful. To that we would answer that any study that corroborates and supports the mind-body connection is worth exploring. A healthy mind and body go hand in hand. As proponents of cannabis as medicine, Supercritical will always promote a natural approach to aspects of wellness beyond and outside the realm of pharmaceuticals and the ofttimes deleterious effects they can bring.  And as always and no matter how you get there….educate yourself first.
