At Supercritical, the pursuit of personal liberties and sources of alternative therapies and medicines do not begin and end with cannabis. So with the realization that two days of ‘creative expansion’ were coming up, we felt the desire to highlight how they came into vogue. And frankly…. who knew!
Many of our readers are already familiar with 420 and the nice little story of how a group of classmates (known as the Waldos) at San Rafael HS would gather on select days at 4:20 to ponder and play the Grateful Dead. How a time of the day morphed into an annual calendar designated event remains cloudy. What is clear is that cites worldwide, from Boulder to Birmingham, host day long cannabis events or as they were originally called, ‘smoke-outs’.
Contrast that with April 19th. During the late 1930’s, Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann worked at Sandoz Laboratories in Basel, Switzerland. His work there included studying plants such as squill and the fungus ergot, in an attempt to synthesize new compounds that could be used for medicinal use. But it wasn’t for another 5 years, April 19th, 1943 to be exact, that Hoffman first accidently, then by design, ingested what is now known as lysergic acid diethylamide 25. Or, in the parlance of our times, LSD. Because this was war time Europe, access to automobiles was limited or they were allocated for military purposes. Hofmann, recognized his altered state and had no other method of transport to return home other than a bicycle. And it was probably good that he didn’t get behind the wheel of a car:
“Now, little by little I could begin to enjoy the unprecedented colors and plays of shapes that persisted behind my closed eyes. Kaleidoscopic, fantastic images surges in on me, alternating, variegated, opening and then closing themselves in circles and spirals, exploding in colored fountains, rearranging and hybridizing themselves in constant flux”
By intentionally ingesting 250 micrograms (!) Hofmann was able to write a first hand and without doubt, the first writing experience of a personal acid trip. And while we don’t recommend taking both acid and a bike ride, you now know a bit more about April 19th and how it became to be known as Bicycle Day. So celebrate with music, art and film that draw on psychedelic experiences. And whatever you do, remember, 420 is the next day!
